Homemade Toothpaste

I'm working to eliminate synthetic chemicals from my personal care products and household cleaners. Abut a month ago, I decided I'd had it with commercial toothpaste. It was the day I could not find a single tube that wasn't "tartar control," which causes the entire lining of my mouth to shed each time I use it, and also causes me to get canker sores. I have used baking soda in a pinch or when I wanted to whiten, swishing with peroxide afterward, but after this escapade, I made the leap. I've used nothing but baking soda for these weeks. I've missed the minty or cinnamon-y flavor much more than I thought I would. So I was thrilled when I stumbled across another blog whose author shares her homemade toothpaste recipe today: http://www.tammysrecipes.com/homemade_toothpaste#comment-21383

Here is her recipe:
2 tablespoons coconut oil
3 tablespoons baking soda
1/2 small packet of stevia powder
20-25 drops of peppermint oil*

1. Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl, using a fork.

*Add about half of the amount of peppermint oil to start, and test the toothpaste to see how much you want/like. I used NOW brand peppermint oil, and ended up stopping at 25 drops which is still not as strong as I am used to, though it does taste nice and minty! Julie noted in her instructions that using part spearmint oil will make the toothpaste not as "hot" as using all peppermint oil.

I can NOT WAIT to try this!!!

This sounds interesting. Let me know how you like it. BTW, we are still living in MO, and are not moving to CO so maybe one of these days we should attempt to meet since we live so stinken close.

I was able to make it a few days ago. When it was fresh (still soft) it was WONDERFUL! I just used 2 tsp coconut oil, 3 tsp baking soda, and about 30 drops of EO, total (half peppermint and half cinnamon). I forgot the stevia, but I don't feel it's needed. HOWEVER- once it gets cool, it's like prying concrete out of the jar. LOL! We keep our thermostat set at 60* in the winter, and that's just too cold for the coconut oil to remain pliable. I am going to try to remember to float the jar in the tub at bathtime to make it usable at least at those times, but I'm back to straight baking soda because I haven't been able to think that far ahead! :-)

Forgot to respond to getting together... that would be fun!

What if you used olive oil instead of coconut?

The thought made me feel a little bit gaggy. :-) I usually use EVOO, and that taste would be very unpleasant, I think. However, I could probably use regular OO and be just fine. Thanks for the suggestion. I remembered to float the jar last night, and it was just right.

I use this toothpaste recipe also. I also make a mouthwash by filling up the old mouthwash bottle 3/4 with peroxide, 1/4 with water. I add 2 TBSP baking soda and 3 drops peppermint essential oils. I gargle with this until its good and foamy in my mouth. I haven't had a sinus infection since I started using this every night, and i was getting 2-3 a year due to allergies.

I use peroxide sometimes, but not always. Your recipe sounds like a fun twist. Much more fun that just chugging straight from the ugly brown bottle!
